Global Crossing Finds an Evening Gown Won't Keep You Warm

If I had to point to any one reason I believe Global Crossing (GX:NYSE - news - commentary - research) is a dead duck, it would be its decision to sell the plain old telephone lines it got from Frontier to Citizens Communications earlier in the year.

That decision, which caused Global to lose its biggest cash cow, plus its move to take Exodus (EXDS:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research) common stock, basically doomed the company.

Global needed the cash, but it needs the cash flow even more. With that cash flow from old Frontier, the possibility that GX would not have to file bankruptcy now that Exodus has would have been much less than it is now.

But Global always wanted to be go-go. It was a financial company, put together by financial guys, that wanted to be cutting-edge. That's what made me like it when things were good, but what made me turn on it when things got bad.

Things are now worse.

Global was always selling basics in order to help pay for expenses elsewhere. It was the mantra of the company.

Now it is its kiss of death. The basics don't falter in a recession. Only the glitzy stuff does.
