What a joke this Nasdaq 100 Unit Trust (QQQ:Amex - news - commentary - research - analysis) is! You think you are investing in the future? You are investing in what's hot at the moment, and nothing more.

Biotech is hot now, so the new index is chock-full of biotechs. Telecom technology and Net infrastructure are ice-cold, so those stocks are getting booted.

Move over Ariba (ARBA:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis), BroadVision (BVSN:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis), CMGI (CMGI:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis), Parametric (PMTC:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis) and RealNetworks (RNWK:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis). Welcome aboard Sepracor (SEPR:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis), Cephalon (CEPH:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis) and Protein Design Labs (PDLI:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis).

At the beginning of this year, I was on a panel with Suze Orman, who recommended buying the QQQ as an investment. It was at almost twice its current value.

I said the QQQ wasn't an investment at all, it was simply the codification of whatever the current fad in the marketplace might be. This rearranging and dumping of losers for current winners proves that this index is nothing more than a collection of hot stocks.

If you want to invest in tech, buy tech stocks, not the QQQ. Buy the tech stocks with the best fundamentals. Then, at the end of the year, you won't have to be like the QQQ, jettisoning a bunch of underperformers that almost anyone could have told you would underperform going into 2002.
