A Bookish Bet on Scholastic

When you're searching for alternatives to tech for your portfolio, think about stocks like Scholastic (SCHL:Nasdaq - news - boards), which was featured on CNBC's "Squawk Box" this morning. Scholastic has visibility out the wazoo. It owns Clifford the Big Red Dog, which is a monster property. Children's educational activities are an amazing annuity. And the company is extremely well-run.

Scholastic is the type of company that disappeared from our radar screens during our intoxicating tech love affair. Nobody really cared that it has so many balanced ways to make money in predictable streams because tech had explosive streams of business. Nobody was interested in some sleepy book publisher when you could own the sexy Amazon (AMZN:Nasdaq - news - boards). Yet Scholastic may be the type of long-term gem that you really can buy and hold with periodic check-ins because it has long-term properties, a huge cash position and a pretty good balance sheet.

All for 20 times earnings!

If we're ever going to kick the habit of pure tech we're going to have to start listening when people like Richard Robinson, Scholastic's excellent CEO, come on television. Today's as good a day as any to start portfolio life over by considering a stock like Scholastic instead of still one more semiconductor or enterprise-software stock. Again, that doesn't mean you must abandon tech. It does mean that you must be more diversified and well-rounded than you once were or are currently.
