The U.S. rig count continues its grind downward, new data released Friday show.

The decline follows the recent decline in energy costs, which have probably taken the edge off of the urgency to drill for energy. In the week ended Jan. 5, the U.S. rig count fell 15 to 1,710. The rig count nonetheless remains relatively close to the 20-year high of 1,762 set in the week ended Aug. 18.

The rig count has been increasing steadily since early 2003, with very little interruption until the latest downturn, which is now five months old.
