No one who has done it for long has ever said trading is easy, but it is even more difficult when we have complete shifts in action from day to day. The stocks that were weak yesterday -- mainly energy, commodity and gold -- are leading today while leaders yesterday like education and pharmaceuticals are down today. There is some favorable action in technology, which was mixed yesterday, and that is the most promising but it is whippy out there.

The upbeat mood is pretty typical of holiday trading and there also tends to be a positive bias in the first few days of the month, but after the rather dour action yesterday it is a bit surprising that we are so lively today.

I've been looking at a couple solar energy plays like Yingli Green Energy (YGE - commentary - Trade Now) and Suntech Power (STP - commentary - Trade Now), and the storage sector is acting well so I'm trading STEC (STEC - commentary - Trade Now). It feels like the squeeze is on so I'm not going to do much on index shorts right now.

At the time of publication, DePorre was long Yingli, Suntech and STEC, but positions may change at any time.

Know What You Own: Solar stocks that may interest investors include LDK Solar (LDK - commentary - Trade Now), MEMC Electronic Materials (WFR - commentary - Trade Now), First Solar (FSLR - commentary - Trade Now), ReneSola (SOL - commentary - Trade Now) and Kyocera (KYO - commentary - Trade Now).
