VoiceStream Loss Widens, But Revenue Rises Sharply

 

VoiceStream Wireless(VSTR Quote), which is being acquired by Deutsche Telekom(DT Quote), posted a wider third-quarter loss compared with a year ago, but saw a dramatic increase in total revenue.

The communication services provider, based in Bellevue, Wash., reported a loss of $657.3 million, or $3.02 a share, compared with a loss of $93 million, or 97 cents a share, in the same period last year. The operating results reflect the effects of the company's Omnipoint and Aerial acquisitions.

Total revenue for the quarter grew to $562.2 million from $134.9 million a year earlier. Subscriber revenue for the third quarter was $336.2 million, up from $106.8 million in the same quarter last year. The company said it added 501,200 subscribers in the quarter, bringing its total customer base to 3.1 million customers.

In extended-hours trading, shares of VoiceStream were recently up 0.2%, or 25 cents, to $117.38, after being halted earlier on the Nasdaq.
