The World's Favorite Candy Is...
New Survey Foretells An Upset In The Making
By Gary Krakow
Arguably, everyone – young and old – male or female - Democrat or Republican - techno-freak or Luddite – loves sweets.
And, even though we're still mired in September the peak candy buying season is fast approaching. Halloween is less than six weeks away.
And, among other meaningful things, that means it's time for the yearly survey of the world's most popular candies – as determined by actual sales.
This year there's a possible upset in the making. Advertising Age reports that the numbers are in and the global leader is about to be dethroned.
According to Euromonitor International, Snickers is about to surpass all the others as the world's most popular candy brand by the end of this year.
The lead will be razor thin, but privately held Mars Inc's peanut and chocolate bar will move from the number three position to number one beat out their perennial leader, M&Ms.
The former number two, Kraft Foods' Trident gum slips from second to third following a small drop in International sales.
For those keeping track, all of Snickers branded candy bars are now doing very well in Eastern Europe with sales in Russia doubling in the past five years.
Now you can tell little Trick or Treaters that you're giving them the world's favorite. Or not.
(A special thanks to Sur La Table for the photo of their terrific-looking, $25 Halloween Candy Bowl.)
