Microsoft, NYPD Partner To Fight Crime In Advance
DAS Software Crunches Data, Determines Possible Problems
By Gary Krakow
What do you get when you combine Microsoft software with the NYPD and their surveillance cameras, radiation detectors, license plate scanners and thousands of pairs of eyes looking all around at any given moment?
Call it DAS for short. Or discuss it by its full name: Domain Awareness System.
The idea is to combine all of the above plus a heaping dose of what New York's Finest call CompStat a system which analyzes all sorts of patterns. It creates a database of areas and exact locations where extreme crimes might occur and even the possibility/probability of a future terrorist attack.
Shades of the CBS TV show "Person of Interest".
According to ZDnet, the system is not just for New York. Microsoft and the NYPD plan to offer it to police organizations nationwide and worldwide with the added benefit of being able to quickly share any problematic data anyone finds.
Remember I said that they're partners in this software venture. That means they'll share the profits. The NYPD is reportedly in line for to receive 30% of the revenues.
