Ikea's New Interactive Catalog
Smartphone Apps To Provide Additional Content, Design Ideas
By Gary Krakow
Just as newspapers and magazines have to adjust to the world of the Internet – so do printed catalogs.
Especially, the eagerly-awaited Ikea catalog. Now in its 61st year, the Ikea catalog is seriously loved by its fans. More than 211 million of them.
Change comes slowly. On purpose. When Ikea changed the catalog's printed typeface, a few years ago, they spent way too much time fielding complaints.
So, they decided to ask for help with adding an Internet component. They employed McCann-Erickson for some ideas concerning 21st Century makeover.
According to Creativity-Online.com, what they've come up with is a “New Kind of Catalog”. An interactive one. Utilizing special smartphone apps, readers will be able to scan catalog pages and see additional information – including extra pictures, video and design ideas - on their screens.
McCann is also developing a plan to overhaul Ikea's Websites as well.
