By Gary Krakow
It's really, really close. But, the new winner of the most-used Web browser, worldwide, is Google's Chrome.
According to the numbers crunchers at StatCounter, Chrome has just edged out Microsoft's Internet Explorer for the first time.
The stats show that it's a real nail biter: by the end of the 21st week of 2012, Chrome polled 31.88% while IE was responsible for 31.47% of all traffic around the world.
As for the other majors Firefox was in third place with 26.4%, Apple's Safari came in with 7.37% and Opera accounted for 1.71%.
Chrome gets really big numbers in in South America. On the other hand, IE is nine percentage points ahead in North American and is huge in the Far East. Firefox dominates the competition on the African continent.
