Dish To Offer High-Speed Broadband Service
New Satellite Allows Fast Satellite-Based Web Connections
By Gary Krakow
Dish wants to be your Internet service provider. That's in addition, of course, to Dish wanting to be your satellite TV and telephone service provider.
According to published reports, Dish Network Corporation is planning on rolling out a satellite broadband Internet connection service.
The new satellite involved in providing this service belongs to EchoStar – the company from which Dish split in 2008.
The technically-sophisticated EchoStar 17 (launched some six weeks ago) is said to be able to handle data download speeds of up to 15 megabits/second although Dish will probably limit subscribers to a maximum of 5 megabit downloads so that more customers can share in the bounty.
Dish plans to officially announce pricing and start-up dates in the next few weeks.
