Americans Watching Less Live TV
Increased Viewing Of Internet Sources Or Not Watching At All
By Gary Krakow
In case you couldn't tell many are watching less television the old-fashioned way. But, they're watching a lot more the new-fangled, Internet way.
According to the new "Cross Platform" survey from Nielsen, something like 75% of American homes which DO NOT receive television signals over-the-air or from cable/satellite/wired feeds still own and use televisions sets.
That means they're watching programming from other sources such as DVDs, Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Roku, AppleTV and others.
If you need further proof, the number of households receiving “traditional” TV service has dropped in the past three years from 99% to slightly below 96%. Do the math. That's a big number.
And Nielsen says people are spending less time watching live/traditional TV shows. Two percent less time. But, they're spending more time watching recorded media at their own pace.
Teens (12-to-17) average 22 hours of TV watching each week. Seniors, 65 and over, spend 48 hours in front of the tube per week.
