Verizon To Complete LTE Network In Mid-2013
NEW YORK (TheStreet) - While AT&T (T) has been busy rolling out its nationwide 4G/LTE networks, Sprint (S) continues working hard around LTE and T-Mobile has to merge with MetroPCS (PCS) to obtain enough spectrum for an LTE network, Verizon (VZ) looks set to complete its roll-out in the next few months.
According to Fierce Wireless, Verizon says it'll be done installing its LTE network halfway through 2013. That's at least six months earlier then it had originally promised.
Verizon believes that its combination of nationwide 3G/CDMA and 4G/LTE services will give customers access to the largest and fastest wireless data networks in the country.
Verizon's LTE coverage currently extends to 80% of the population, or 250 million potential customers. It expects LTE to be available in more than 260 PoPs (carrier termination points or "points of presence") by the end of next year.
The telecom giant's closest 4G competitor, AT&T, plans to have LTE available to 150 million PoPs by the end of this year and to 250 million potential customers by the end of next.
