What Apple's iPhone 5 Lacks: Poll

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Even though the iPhone 5 is selling like hotcakes, consumers believe that Apple (AAPL - Get Report) left out a lot of innovation in its latest release.

TheStreet surveyed readers asking them which features are the most glaring omissions on the iPhone 5. The majority of respondents said they wished Apple had wireless charging.

Of the 227 people who voted, 75 people cited wireless charging as the biggest omission. Nokia (NOK - Get Report) introduced this capability with its Lumia 920, the first smartphone to have such a feature. Apple senior vice president of marketing Phil Schiller said in a recent interview that wireless charging was not included as it's not clear how much convenience it adds. "Having to create another device you have to plug into the wall is actually, for most situations, more complicated," Schiller explained.

The second most popular feature that users were looking for but didn't get was Near Field Communication (NFC). NFC is primarily used for mobile payments, an idea Apple has been toying with. The company introduced Passbook in iOS 6, a location-aware app that many believe is Apple's entry into the digital wallet. Schiller also noted it's not clear that NFC solves any issues, explaining that Passbook already does most of what customers want.

"Something else" was the third most popular option on the poll, receiving 18.94% of the votes. Comments on the story asked for such items as a cheese grater, a taser, and the ability to levitate (tongue in cheek obviously).

Nearly 15% of respondents were looking for Apple to make the screen on the iPhone even bigger, at 5 inches. The iPhone 5 is the first iPhone with a 4-inch screen. Previous versions had 3.5-inch screens.

Other readers were looking for something like facial unlock recognition, similar to what's available on some Android-based phones already. Android is owned by Google (GOOG).

Despite this "wish list" of features readers were hoping for, one thing appears clear: demand for the iPhone 5 is at an unprecedented level.
