Apple Roundup: Apple TV, Amazon, The Daily

Stock quotes in this article: AAPL, AMZN, DIS

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- The top Apple (AAPL) stories spanning the Internet include Hulu Plus coming to the Apple TV, Amazon Instant Video on the iPad, and an iPad-only newspaper that's letting go of a third of its employees.

Hulu Plus has arrived on Apple TV, albeit with little press. The app showed up very quietly on Apple TV this morning.

Apple continues to add apps like Hulu Plus to its set-top box offering, as consumers look to try to "cut the cord," and get rid of their cable boxes.

Hulu was up for sale last year, as its owners tried to unlock the value in the video streaming service. Ultimately, however, a sale was scrapped by Hulu's owners, which include News Corp. (NWSA), Walt Disney (DIS), Comcast (CMCSA) unit NBCUniversal and private-equity firm Providence Equity Partners.

Amazon (AMZN) has brought its Instant Video service to the iPad, with the app showing up on the App Store this morning.

Amazon Instant Video is free for users of Amazon Prime, which costs $79 per year. The app's description notes that you can "[w]atch thousands of titles available from Prime Instant Video at no additional cost with an Amazon Prime membership and over 120,000 videos available from the Amazon Instant Video store by installing the Amazon Instant Video app."

Users also have the ability to start watching a video on their iPad, and finish watching it on a variety of other devices, including Kindle Fire, Sony (SNE) PS3, PC, Mac, or hundreds of models of connected TVs and Blu-ray players with Amazon Whispersync.

The Daily, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. (NWSA) is laying off almost one-third of its employees, according to media reports, as the iPad-only newspaper seeks to cut costs.

Of the newspaper's 170 employees, 50 of them were let go, with the editorial section shut down altogether. The sports section will continue running, despite having a smaller staff with which to operate.

News. Corp. has not yet responded to TheStreet's request for comment on this story.

Apple shares edged higher in Wednesday morning, up 0.21% at $612.02.
