Updated from 12:23 p.m. EST to provide additional details regarding comScore data.
Facebook launched the App Center with both mobile and web apps. It has 600 apps to start with, including popular ones such as Draw Something, Pinterest, and Nike+ (NKE) GPS. It also includes new apps such as Jetpack Joyride, Ghosts of Mistwood, and Ghost Recon Commander.
Apple and Google already have their own app stores, the App Store, and Google Play, respectively. Apple's app store features more than 500,000 apps, including over 200,000 for the iPad. Apple recently celebrated its 25 billionth app download. Google has over 500,000 games and apps in Google Play, and recently surpassed the 10 billion download mark.Facebook's mobile strategy has been a major source of concern for investors, and the company itself. The social networking giant recently bought Instagram to make the mobile experience better for users. However, the company does not generate any meaningful revenue from its mobile, so its App Center may be a way for the company to soothe investors concerns. The App Center can be found on Facebook's mobile app for both the iPhone and Android phones, as well as Facebook.com. The App Center started appearing in the United States last night, and will become available to the entire world in the upcoming weeks. Internet marketing firm comScore announced that Facebook ads are more effective than previously thought. The company is going to publish new findings next week that Facebook ads are more effective as per their research, with Facebook-earned media having a "statistically significant positive lift on people's purchasing of a brand." Shares of Facebook rose in late action, gaining 3.4% to $27.17. Interested in more on Facebook? See TheStreet Ratings' report card for this stock. Check out our new tech blog, Tech Trends.
