Hyperion Hammers Estimates

Hyperion Solutions (HYSL) rose 7% late Tuesday after the software company beat second-quarter estimates and bought a company known as Decisioneering.

The Santa Clara, Calif., company made $21.5 million, or 36 cents a share, for the quarter ended Dec. 31, up from the year-ago $15.5 million, or 25 cents a share. Revenue rose 20% from a year ago to $223 million.

Excluding certain items, earnings rose to 50 cents from 37 cents a year earlier. Analysts were looking for a 44-cent profit on sales of $212 million.

"We're pleased to report the best second fiscal quarter in Hyperion's history," said CEO Godfrey R. Sullivan. "License revenue grew 14%, as customers increasingly recognize Hyperion as the management system for the global enterprise. This is our third consecutive quarter of double-digit license revenue growth, fueled by increasing demand for Hyperion System 9. We set new company records for number of transactions with new customers, net income, and earnings per share and are increasingly winning in stand-alone business intelligence transactions."

For the third quarter, Hyperion expects to make 40 to 45 cents a share on an adjusted basis, on sales of $215 million to $220 million. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial were looking for a 42-cent profit on sales of $209 million.

Shares rose $2.48 to $36.90.
