Shares of most major U.S. carriers fell Tuesday as the broader stock market also fell. United Airlines parent UAL (UAUA Quote) reported a money-losing third quarter on Tuesday but said it is beginning to see signs that business travel could pick up soon. The recession has hurt business travel at all the big airlines. While United and other carriers have used discounts to fill seats, it will be tough to turn a profit unless higher-spending business travelers begin flying again. UAL lost $57 million and revenue fell 20.3% to $4.43 billion. But the loss was smaller than analysts expected, and the revenue drop-off per passenger was 14.7%, less than in the second quarter. Delta Air Lines (DAL Quote) shares fell 69 cents to $8.33, while shares of American Airlines parent AMR (AMR Quote) lost 91 cents to $6.75 and shares of UAL fell 98 cents, or 12.4%, to $6.92. Continental Airlines (CAL Quote) shares fell $2.19 to $13.73 while US Airways Group (LCC Quote) shares lost 48 cents to $3.87. Southwest Airlines (LUV Quote) shares fell 41 cents to $8.85. JetBlue Airways (JBLU Quote) shares fell 28 cents to $5.74, and shares of AirTran Airways parent AirTran Holdings (AAI Quote) fell 53 cents to $4.87. AMR, Continental and AirTran release third-quarter results on Wednesday, while Delta and US Airways release results on Thursday.- Loading Comments...
