HAMPSTEAD, MD. (TheStreet) -- Is menswear weathering the economic storm better than women's?

That's certainly the impression from the latest quarterly report from JoS. A. Bank Clothiers (JOSB Quote), which posted a 40% surge in second-quarter profit on actual increased sales.

Shares of the company were up 3% to $44 in pre-market trading.

During the quarter, the company earned $12.5 million, or 68 cents a share, compared with $8.9 million, or 48 cents, in the year-ago period. Analysts expected a profit of 54 cents a share.

Sales grew 10% to $167.7 million from $152.7 million, while same-store sales increased 6.2%.

Last week a string of women's retailers reported disappointing second-quarter results. New York & Company(NWY Quote), Coldwater Creek (CWTR Quote) and AnnTaylor Stores (ANN Quote) all reported a loss in the quarter.

The only standout was Chico's FAS(CHS Quote), which saw both profits and earnings in the black.
